Types of Internet Providers:

Dial Up Access:

Using a modem inside your computer this type of service connects you to a server via common telephone lines. The highest connection speed you can obtain is 53kb/s, though this is only in ideal conditions. Distance from the server and quality of the telephone lines play important parts in determining the speed of your internet connection. Currently dial up internet providers have access to the largest percentage of the population, but its customer base is shrinking.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Loop):

This is the second technology that uses phone lines, but in a different way. It splits the frequencies of the telephone lines in half, using one half for talking and the other half for data transmission. Filters must be placed on all telephones connected to the phone line in order to prevent the noise from the data transmission interfere with the telephone call. Also, unlike dial up, a single phone line can be used for both internet access and voice communication. Phone companies sometimes allow “naked” DSL which does not require a phone subscription, but a majority of connections require both phone and internet subscriptions.

Cable Connections:

Another service that is faster than dial up internet providers is that of a cable connection. It utilizes the same cable as your television to provide broadband internet into the home. This is typically the fastest out of all the residential plans, but also the most expensive. The most recognizable cable internet provider is Time Warner’s Road Runner.

Satellite Internet:

Probably the most expensive option for internet access is satellite internet. It utilizes your satellite dish for internet access. This is sometimes the only broadband option for people living in rural areas. It also is not ideal for gaming or using VOIP (Voice over IP) phone service. Speeds are roughly comparable to midrange DSL service.

Cell Phone Access:

Cell Phone providers have offered data plans for quite some time and as prices are dropping, they are becoming more prevalent. Apple’s iPhone and the Blackberry are two examples of cell phones that can make use of the cell network to browse the internet anywhere that there is service. Data plans typically cost an additional fee beyond normal cell phone plans.
